Meet Cat

Cat Slack (formerly Cat Cvengros) is an expert speaker, fundraiser and nonprofit leader. Cat gets to be a consultant at Aperio Philanthropy, helping nonprofits connect with and serve their communities. Cat most recently served as the Chief Philanthropy Officer for Second Harvest of Silicon Valley for five years. In that time, she increased revenues by 203%, from $37M to $112M. The dollars raised fed about a half a million individuals each month in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Cat enjoys fiddling with her telescope, hiking and telling stories. She lives in Oklahoma City with her husband, the amazing Mike Slack.

My Words

The dough

When I was in high school I had a part-time job in a bakery. Most nights the extra bread that did not sell was picked up by local charities for distribution, but Saturday night’s excesses did not have a recipient (even do-gooders need a night off). It hurt my heart to see a dozen boxes of bread go to the trash, so I filled my old sedan with them and drove them to churches and neighborhoods on Sunday so those in need could get some bread. My car smelled like yeasty dough for years, and it set me on a course of service for the rest of my life. Occasionally I write about the lessons or questions I have encountered in my work in this blog. Thank you for reading.

Dedicate some of your life to others. Your dedication will not be a sacrifice. It will be an exhilarating experience, because it is an intense effort applied toward a meaningful end.
